NTU's Students Hunger Interventions (2025)

SDGs

NTU's dining facilities are available throughout the campus, and NTU implements a range of practical interventions to prevent and alleviate hunger among students by improving access to affordable food on campus. These interventions include targeted meal support for financially disadvantaged students and campus-wide affordable dining initiatives.

1. Targeted Hunger Intervention: Living Allowance Meal Plan
NTU offers the "Living Allowance Meal Plan (生活津貼餐食方案)," a long-term meal support programme for students experiencing financial hardship, providing a monthly allowance of NT$5,000. The allowance can be used at all on-campus restaurants, convenience stores, and retail outlets, ensuring broad and convenient access to food across campus. More than 400 students benefit from the programme each semester, reducing financial barriers to food and ensuring continued access to affordable, nutritious meals throughout their studies.

2. Complementary Intervention: Affordable Campus Dining
On-campus meal prices are generally 10–20% lower than comparable off-campus dining options, making campus dining a more affordable choice for students. To help maintain these affordable prices, food costs on campus are also monitored by the university: during the contract period, vendors wishing to raise menu prices must submit a formal application with supporting documentation, and the university approves only reasonable price adjustments after a comprehensive assessment. In addition, self-service buffet vendors and chain brands—including convenience stores and fast-food restaurants—offer discounts of 5–15% to students who present a valid student ID, further improving affordability.

3. Food Waste Reduction Discounts
NTU dining halls offer discounted or free meals before closing each evening, with discounts typically ranging from 20% to 35%. This initiative further improves students' access to affordable meals, particularly for students seeking low-cost meal options later in the day.
