The Imminent End: New Energy and Environmental Sustainability

SDGs

In recent years, climate change-related disasters, including warming, floods, droughts, and wildfires, have occurred frequently worldwide. The global community has deeply felt the severe consequences of climate change. Simultaneously, we have begun to take notice of some potential yet not fully manifested changes, such as alterations in biological behaviors, impacts on crop production, and mutations of pathogens and viruses. In our concerted effort to achieve the goal of keeping global temperatures from exceeding 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels, there is a pressing need for a more proactive pursuit of the transition to net-zero emissions. One pivotal approach to achieving this transition is the development of new energy sources, such as hydrogen energy, or a reevaluation of the application of existing energy sources, such as nuclear energy. To this end, NTU hosted a series of forums in September and October 2022. These forums delved into topics like "Development of Carbon Reduction and Negative Technologies for New-Zero Pledge: Perspectives and Challenges,” "Reconceptualizing Nuclear Energy: Ensuing Both Energy Sustainability and Energy Security," and "The Future of Energy: The Path to Net-Zero and the Development Direction of Hydrogen Energy.” The discussions centered around how Taiwan can strike a balance between energy development and energy self-reliance within the context of the transition to net-zero emissions.
