NTU is dedicated to promoting aquatic conservation

National Taiwan University is dedicated to promoting aquatic conservation. As a member of the Taiwan Ocean Union, we work towards integrating interdisciplinary marine research and enhancing basic marine investigations to support ocean conservation efforts. We host international academic conferences on coral reefs to raise awareness of the importance of aquatic conservation.
Furthermore, in collaboration with the government, we organize OECM (Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures) marine workshops to educate relevant organizations on OECM fundamentals, certification criteria, and procedures. We have also established an educational team for freshwater ecosystems, where we have set up a water environmental patrol team at the North District River Conservation Center. This team provides guidance to 486 water environmental patrol teams nationwide, fostering collaboration between communities, the public, schools, and environmental organizations to maintain water environments and promote environmental education.
Moreover, our university offers a "Environmental Plastic Reduction and Coastal Cleanup" course that actively engages students in beach cleanup activities. We believe in the power of collective action to improve coastal environments. Additionally, our GMBA alumni association organizes beach cleanup events along the northern coast, putting conservation principles into practice.

Taiwan Ocean Union
Our university has joined the Taiwan Ocean Union and is driving progress in three major dimensions: integrating interdisciplinary marine research, enhancing fundamental marine investigations, and advancing critical ocean technology infrastructure. As a part of the Ocean Data and Research Vessel Group, Ocean Observation Technology Group, and Ocean Engineering Technology Group, our university is responsible for monitoring activities in marine waters and establishing a platform for sharing marine research data, all aimed at promoting the conservation of aquatic resources.

Taiwan International Coral Reef Academic Conference
Coral reef ecosystems are home to rich biodiversity, but they are increasingly facing changes due to natural environmental fluctuations and human interference. In an effort to protect marine ecology, our university hosted the inaugural Taiwan International Coral Reef Academic Conference. This conference covered diverse topics aimed at expanding our understanding of coral reef ecosystems.

OECM Marine Workshop
Our university conducts themed workshops to assist the government and various organizations in understanding the definition of OECM (Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures) and its international promotion status. These workshops aim to share the fundamental concepts, certification criteria, and processes of OECM, along with domestic and international case studies, to promote the OECM concept for areas with conservation functions that are not designated as protected areas. OECM are sites outside of protected areas that are governed and managed in ways that deliver the long-term in situ conservation of biodiversity.

Northern Region River Conservation Center - Water Environment Patrol Team
Our university's Department of Environmental Engineering has established the Northern Region River Conservation Center to assist the Environmental Protection Administration in mentoring 486 Water Environment Patrol Teams from various counties and cities. We provide operational strategies and educational training to these teams. Collaborating with the public, communities, environmental organizations, and educational institutions at all levels, we engage in activities such as reporting pollution incidents, participating in river and beach clean-up efforts, and community environmental improvement projects. Additionally, we work to promote the concept of environmental education, enhancing public participation in safeguarding water environments and spreading awareness about the importance of water conservation.
