NTU actively fosters a culture of conscious water usage through policy implementation, education, and demonstration initiatives. Guided by the Principles for Water Resource Management and Reuse—which outline four key areas: Water Usage Management, Water Usage Safety, Water Usage Reduction, and Water Recycling and Reuse—the University integrates sustainability into campus operations and student learning.
To reduce water consumption, NTU prioritizes the use of water-saving toilets and faucets throughout campus facilities. The University also opts for drought-tolerant tree species for campus landscaping to minimize irrigation water needs. In support of water recycling and reuse efforts, NTU actively encourages the installation of rainwater harvesting and gray water reclamation systems in existing buildings. Furthermore, the University requires the installation of rainwater harvesting systems in all newly constructed buildings, ensuring that sustainable water management practices are embedded in future campus development.
To promote awareness of water reuse technologies, NTU established a demonstration site featuring a reclaimed water system that combines membrane bioreactor and capacitive deionization technologies. This system treats domestic wastewater into reusable water and recovers nutrient salts for hydroponic cultivation, illustrating a Water-Food-Energy Nexus model.
Educational exhibitions such as Fertile Farmland Looking Toward the Water (Nov 2023-Jun 2024), highlight the evolution of NTU’s hydrological landscape and foster appreciation for sustainable water culture. In addition, annual student campaigns promote responsible water and electricity use in dormitories through comparative monitoring and friendly competitions.
