NTU’s Climate Action

Our Sustainability Governance Framework

To engage in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, NTU announced in October 2021 to establish the "Sustainable Development Promotion Committee"; and the "Office of Sustainability". The President serves as the chair of the Promotion Committee which is responsible for drafting the sustainable development strategies and goals. The office is to integrate NTU's administrative and academic resources, and execute action plans that focus on making the NTU campus more sustainable.

Our Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

On June 23, 2020, NTU's President Kuan announced that NTU has pledged towards the Paris Agreement of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5℃, and set its carbon reduction targets according to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). NTU pledges to reach 50% of carbon neutrality (both scope 1 and 2 emissions) by its centennial in 2028 and achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2048. Following SBTi criteria, NTU proposed carbon reduction targets as well as the roadmap and measures to reach these targets within 24 months. The preliminary plan uses a combination of five major strategies, including the development of negative carbon technology, the improvement of energy efficiency, the use of decarbonized electricity and low-carbon energy, electrification, and the exchange of certificates to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Details include planning for fuel vehicles to exit the NTU campus and promoting the participation of the EV100 initiative (electrical transportation), taking advantage of the expertise of NTU faculty, planning a research project for near-zero energy-consuming buildings on campus to create climate-friendly buildings, integrating air quality monitoring, thermal comfort, and ventilation, improved energy-saving measures and lowering the reliance on air-conditioning,  introducing smart energy management systems and encouraging laboratories to use energy-saving equipments.
