University Access to Local Farmers and Food Producers

SDGs

  1. ANIMAL DISEASE DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES
Although Yunlin County is a major area for animal farming, farmers often need to send specimens to disease diagnostic centers in neighboring counties for disease diagnosis when outbreaks occur. To reduce the economic burden on farmers and enhance animal disease control, NTU has established a local animal disease diagnostic center to provide comprehensive animal disease diagnostics and assist in evaluating vaccination strategies and epidemic control plans. The results of our efforts in 2023 are as follows:
    1. Livestock - Pigs:
      • 4,077 antibody diagnostic services.
      • 2,997 molecular biology diagnostics.
      • 249 microbial isolation, identification, and drug sensitivity tests.
      • 74 tissue pathology diagnostics.
      • 43 on-site disease prevention and diagnostic technical services.
      • 48 field visits.
    2. Aquaculture:
      • 4 molecular biology diagnostics.
      • 12 microbial isolation, identification, and drug sensitivity tests.
    3. Poultry:
      • 412 molecular biology diagnostics.
      • 166 microbial isolation, identification, and drug sensitivity tests.
      • 22 tissue pathology diagnostics.
      • 22 on-site disease prevention and diagnostic technical services.
    4. Ruminants:
      • 23 microbial isolation, identification, and drug sensitivity tests.
      • 6 tissue pathology diagnostics.
      • 5 on-site disease prevention and diagnostic technical services.
    5. Mouse Antibody Diagnostic Services: 113 services.

  2. PLANT DISEASE DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES
To promote sustainable agriculture, NTU offers plant pest and disease diagnosis, as well as prescription, protection, and consultation services through our Plant Teaching Hospital. We collaborate with the Yunlin County Government to implement regular on-site “plant doctor” services, addressing local farmers' questions related to plant diseases, pests, fertilizer application, and safe pesticide use. Currently, we have 7 on-site plant doctors in the area. We also organize thematic workshops on key crops in Yunlin County (e.g., peanuts, bamboo shoots, garlic), educating farmers on the use of reasonable and appropriate plant protection techniques to reduce production costs and improve the quality of the agricultural environment. The achievements for 2023 are as follows:
    1. Total number of plant medicine diagnostic services provided: 300 cases
    2. Total area of guidance provided: 1,145.02 hectares
    3. Number of plant medicine knowledge questionnaires distributed: 420 questionnaires
    4. Number of crop-themed training workshops held: 7, with 656 participants

  3. MILLET REVIVAL INITIATIVE AT THE EXPERIMENTAL FOREST
Millet is deeply intertwined with the traditional culture of Taiwan's indigenous peoples. However, due to societal changes and economic development, the practice of cultivating millet has significantly declined, leading to the disappearance of native millet and its associated seasonal rituals. To revive this indigenous millet culture, NTU began in 2020 by introducing purebred millet seeds from the U.S. Seed Bank, which had disappeared locally. With the support of E.SUN Bank, we have millet seeds and planting expertise, encouraging greater participation from local residents in millet cultivation. collaborated with the Bunun community in Nantou County's Xinyi Township to reintroduce and cultivate 28 different strains of millet. By establishing millet planting demonstration areas and organizing training workshops, we aim to provide stable sources of native millet seeds and planting expertise, encouraging more local residents to participate in millet farming.
