NTU Carbon Neutral Commitment

In 2020, NTU announced its carbon neutrality goal:
50% carbon neutrality by 2028 & 100% carbon neutrality by 2048.

Carbon Neutral Strategies

In 2022, with insights from the 2020 GHG emissions inventory and the NTU Social Responsibility and Sustainability Governance Action Plan, the NTU Office of Sustainability formulated carbon-neutrality strategies suitable for NTU’s development, specified feasible measures for implementation, and estimated the potential carbon reduction. The five major strategies for achieving carbon-neutrality are Equipment Electrification (reducing Category 1 carbon emissions), Energy Decarbonization, Energy Conservation (reducing Category 2 carbon emissions), Negative Emissions Technologies (NETs), and Carbon Offset。


 

NTU's Pathway to Carbon-Neutrality

To make NTU carbon-neutral, pathways have been developed for various scenarios and several working groups have been formed. Looking ahead, we will continue to communicate and coordinate with different parties involved to consolidate our efforts. According to the achievements made each year and in light of the latest scientific and technological findings, the pathways and strategies will be revised for the ultimate objective of becoming a 50% carbon-neutral campus by 2028 and a 100% carbon-neutral campus by 2048.



 

Sharing NTU Carbon Neutral Plan

NTU published our Carbon Neutral Plan in 2022, which is one of the very first universities in Taiwan to draft a Carbon Neutral Roadmap. Hence, NTU had many opportunities to share it plan with the public. Here are some examples of Carbon Neutral Plan presentations that happened in 2024. 

1. National Sustainable Development Awards

National Sustainable Development Award is an annual award granted by NTU, shared our the National Council for Sustainable Development, under the Executive Yuan of the Taiwanese central government. The award evaluation committee includes the Minister of Interior, the Department of Environmental Protection, and the Taipei City Government. The committee is extremely interested in NTU's climate action on Net-Zero Building, GHG Inventory, energy efficiency, and equipment electrification. Local government (Taipei City Government) was particularly interested in NTU's GHG Inventory process, NTU's renewable energy plans, building energy efficiency progress, and local education on climate change.  

NTU is honored to receive the award on December 19, 2024, with Premier Jung-Tai Cho presenting the award and Executive Vice President Shih-Torng Ding accepting it on behalf of NTU.


 

2. Taiwan University Alliance for Sustainable Governance

NTU is a member of the Taiwan University Alliance for Sustainable Governance. NTU shared our carbon neutral plan and climate action effect in the Alliance Annual Conference held at National Sun Yat-sen University on May 24, 2024. The alliance consists of nine universities in Taiwan, and it is very crucial to share our climate actions with peers in order to encourage improvement. NTU's presentation focuses on how digital data facilitates climate actions.
